A film you can really drink in

Kyle Niehoff wrote, directed, produced and shot 'Beer Wars.'
(Kyle's nose is not really this big.)

What's more fun than a bad outer space movie with lasers, damsels and rocket ships?

An outer space movie with beer. Lots of beer.

Eight years ago, Wake Forest video producer Kyle Niehoff popped open his brain and poured out a sudsy Star Wars spoof about rebel micro- brewers and a sinister corporation -- aptly named Sinister Corporation.

"I wrote this cover page of a "Beer Wars" movie. It took a year to write out," Niehoff, 35, said. "Then it just got out of hand."

"Beer Wars" pits rebel brewers desperately seeking a recipe for the master microbrew while being chased around the galaxy by Dark Brewer, a tall guy with a helmet made of a spray painted 24-pack with hoses plugged in the side.

In 1998, Niehoff used the script as an excuse to quit his job and get back into video and film production after a stint in Wilmington as a headhunter. The Massachusetts native got together with a college buddy and filmed on and off for the better part of a decade.

It was all a big fun inside joke until someone else laughed.

Niehoff decided to screen the movie, filmed mostly in Wake Forest, after some friends of friends thought it was hilarious.

"One guy said, 'I could see a copy of this in every fraternity house in America,' " Niehoff said.

Beer Wars will be screened Feb. 24 at The Rialto at 1620 Glenwood Ave. Doors open at 6:15. Film rolls at 7 p.m. The cost is $5.

Beer will be available for purchase. You might need it.

"There is a two-drink minimum in order to enjoy this movie," according to the Web site (www.beerwars.com).
